My Journey: From the Reception Desk to the Boardroom

Every great journey begins with a single step, and mine began as an Aero Electronic and Instrument Trainee at the Sri Lanka Air Force, right after completing my college education. However, I left the Air Force 10 days prior to passing out, as I wanted to pursue a career in the more dynamic corporate world. I started my civil career at the front desk as a receptionist. This decision marked the beginning of my transition into various business sectors, where I would spend over two decades advancing into multinational leadership roles and eventually become a Non-Executive Director at the Institute of Finance and Insurance Professionals.

Starting out, I focused on learning every aspect of my role, always looking for ways to go beyond expectations. This mindset allowed me to transition into roles that required a deeper understanding of organizational operations. I moved into administrative positions, then into middle management, and eventually to senior leadership roles.

From Humble Beginnings to Leadership Excellence

Starting out in the Sri Lanka Air Force, I learned discipline, precision, and teamwork—skills that would later prove invaluable in my career. However, seeking a new challenge, I entered the corporate world, beginning with administrative roles. Over time, I progressed into middle management and senior leadership positions, always striving to go beyond expectations and expand my skill set.

Key Milestones Along the Way

  • Expanding Expertise
After leaving the Sri Lanka Air Force, I pursued further education, earning an MBA from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and a Diploma in Project Management. These qualifications helped me apply strategic thinking and refine my understanding of business operations.
  • Leadership Opportunities
Throughout my career, I took on senior roles such as Chief Operating Officer and General Manager. In these positions, I led high-performing teams and managed complex multinational projects, shaping my leadership abilities and gaining a deep understanding of business management.
  • Mentoring and Coaching
Sharing my knowledge has always been a core passion. I’ve actively mentored aspiring leaders, particularly women, helping them navigate their careers and unlock their full potential.

Core Values That Shaped My Path

Three principles have been central to my journey:

  1. Integrity
Building trust and ensuring ethical practices in every role I undertake.
  2. Adaptability
Thriving in diverse industries, including banking, hospitality, and telecommunications.
  3. Empowerment
Motivating and inspiring others to realize their potential and achieve their goals.

Contributing at the Highest Level

Today, as a Non-Executive Director, I contribute to the governance and strategic direction of the Institute of Finance and Insurance Professionals. In this role, I advocate for sustainability, professional development, and excellence in the finance and insurance sectors.

Lessons from the Journey

Looking back, every job, no matter how small it may seem, has been a stepping stone toward something greater. My story highlights the importance of commitment, lifelong learning, and the belief in one’s ability to achieve success.

I hope my journey serves as an inspiration for those starting their careers: embrace every opportunity, stay dedicated to your growth, and always believe in your potential to succeed.
